Detailed Description
A ten-year dream for local stonemason and entrepreneur
John Bridges was
unveiled on September 26th, 1999. Erected at the entrance
to Summit
Restoration Ltd./ Old World Stone on Heritage Road in
Burlington, the
20-tonne limestone monument depicts humankind's most
significant
achievements and several outstanding figures of the
20th century.
Originally a 30-tonne block of Indiana limestone, the
9-ft. stone was
first cut into a mushroom cloud shape, to symbolize
the splitting of the
atom.
The images on its four sides, by Canadian carver Frank
Anjo, represent
such milestones as the flight at Kitty Hawk, the Model
T Ford, the first
landing on the moon, and the Canada Arm.
Other images on the 5 foot high stone represent important
discoveries in
medicine and inventions in the field of communications.
The figures of
Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa
and Mahatma Gandhi
lean out and invite the viewer to reflect on how their
actions helped
shape history.
The 12-foot high, 20-tonne obelisk contains carvings
on one side representing the various ages of architecture
from the Stone Age to the present. The opposite side
is carved with images that represent the evolution of
man.
