When the chapel was originally constructed, the stone
was improperly face bedded, a problem only noticed years
later when water and weather caused the carved elements
of the building to shale and spall. The problem was
particularly evident on the spire quoins and main entrance
jambs.
Original units, recovered by Folan Waterproofing, were
shipped to Old World Stone and reproduced in Birmingham
buff sandstone. A large memorial plaque, depicting "These
Stones Shall be for a Memorial" was eroding and
becoming illegible. The architect reproduced the lettering
by creating a charcoal rubbing of the original and submitted
it to Old World Stone where the lettering was recreated
using classical font styles.
